Visakhapatnam: The ongoing truckers strike in the south India and rising temperature is pushing up the prices of vegetables in the Rythu Bazars and more so in private retail shops across the city. Marketing department sources said the prices will go further up as there would be less harvesting due to reduced supply of groundwater.

Estate officers of various Rythu Bazars said there has been marginal increase in the prices of vegetables like lady’s fingers, beans, ridge gourd, bitter gourd, green peas, brinjal, tindoor and a few others varieties. The rate of brinjal has gone up to Rs 26 a kg which was Rs 23 three days ago. In the open retail market, the price is hovering between Rs 35 and Rs 40 per kg. Similarly, the price of lady’s fingers has gone up to Rs 50 per kg.

Similarly, the truckers strike has affected the prices of potatoes and onions which are mostly imported from outside. The strike jacked up the price of these two items by 20 per cent on Wednesday. However, the price of tomatoes has come down. It was Rs 18 per kg last week and on Wednesday it fell to Rs 12 per kg.

Consumers are worried that the prices would go up further in the peak summer next month and June. “Most of us have to depend on eggs during the summers and this year it will be no exception,’’ said M Sujatha, a housewife from Seethammadhara. The city has 12 Rythu Bazaars and gets more than 2,000 tonnes of vegetables every day from nearby villages and Agency areas.
