Amaravati: The AP government sought Central assistance to insulate chilli growers from the present price crash. The Cabinet, which met for the first time after the reshuffle here on Thursday, decided to write to the NDA government seeking price stabilisation funds and the intervention of National Market Federation (NAFED) to check the falling prices.

The Cabinet took a decision in this regard close on the heels of a similar appeal by the Telangana government to the Centre seeking Rs 250 crore as price stabilisation fund to rescue the distressed growers in Khammam and Warangal districts. The Cabinet also resolved to deploy the AP Markfed in procurement of the produce from the farmers.

It was also decided to constitute a group of ministers comprising Marketing Minister Prattipati Pulla Rao and Agriculture Minister Somireddy Chandramonah Reddy to study the factors leading to the price crash. The ministers will visit the chilli yard in Guntur as part of the mission on Friday, said Information and Public Relations Minister Kalva Srinivasulu while briefing the media.

The Cabinet decided to prepare contingency plan for augmentation of drinking water supplies during the present summer season. The Cabinet approved a proposal to construct 5,000 check dams across the State under Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme.

The old check dams would be repaired to help in increasing storage capacity as part of the contingency plan under the NREGS. A toll-free number would be setup by the government to protect workers from sunstroke while at work.

The Cabinet resolved to prepare a draft policy of AP land development rules in municipalities to make way for rapid urban growth and speedy implementation of housing programmes in urban areas. The draft policy aims to clear the layouts pending with the respective civic bodies on a war-footing.

The Cabinet gave its nod to permit APIIC to make way for the sale deed entered with Hero Motor Corporation Limited facilitating an investment of Rs 400 crore in phase-I in the state.

The project is expected to generate employment opportunities with a capacity to manufacture 5 lakh vehicles by investing Rs 1,200, in all, in the phase-I, phase-II and phase-III. It is also decided to extend the lease period for a government land housing the Andhra Hospitals in Vijayawada from the present 12 years to 25 years.
