Nellore: State government seems to have junked the proposed domestic airport at Dagadarthi in Kodavalur mandal quashing huge efforts put in for land acquisition, technical feasibility studies and other permissions from Central government. Plans afoot for shifting the airport close to Krishnapatnam Port eying huge cargo revenue

It may be recalled that the district administration has roped in the services of RITES for preparing feasibility studies, interacted with local farmers on land acquisition process and the process is going on. However in January, it was being said that the state government was keen on an airport close the Krishnapatnam Port and the district administration was directed to scout for 1,400 acres of land giving an indication that they would be putting an end to Dagadarthi which is 30 km away from Nellore.

Initially, the district administration earmarked around 3,407.77 acres of land under Damavaram, Dagadarthi, Velupodu and K Kourugunta villages for the proposed airport in 2013 and subsequently Airports Authority of India has given its nod for initial acquisition of 614 acres and the Union government too accorded clearance in December 2015.

CM Chandrababu Naidu had reportedly requested the Civil Aviation Minister P Ashok Gajapathi Raju to consider shifting the proposed airport to Krishnapatnam by virtue of its vicinity to the port for container-related business and revenue from other sources from heavy industries located in the region. It is being said that the state government has decided to shift the location of the airport, after a cargo terminal was planned in the Krishnapatnam Port.

“Identification of lands has started on the eastern part of the district close to the coast for the proposed industrial corridors and some portion of them would be allocated for the proposed domestic airport,” said an official from the revenue department.
