Guntur: Minister of Agriculture Somireddy Chandramohan Reddy on Friday said that government will solve problems of the chilli farmers. He conducted a meeting with the agriculture department officials of cold storage units in the Collectorate in Guntur city. Speaking on this occasion, Chandramohan Reddy said that chilli was sold at Rs. 11,000 per quintal during the last year, due to increase of production, prices have fallen this year.

He said this year chilli cultivating area has increased to Rs. 4.64 lakh acres from 3.9-lakh acres and added that when the production increased, demand for chillies has fallen. He said, when the prices of chilli has fallen, the farmers incurred heavy losses. He assured that the government will extend necessary help to the farmers. He said the government will take a decision on how to purchase 12 lakh quintals of chilli stocks from the farmers.

He said they will submit a report to the government with the suggestions and advises given by the owners of the cold storage units and officials which Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu will send to the Central government seeking funds to purchase chillies to solve problems of chilli farmers.

Minister of Civil Supplies, Prattipati Pulla Rao said if e-marketing is fully implemented, the farmers problems will be solved. He said about 8 lakh tikkies of chilli stocks were kept in the cold storage units. He said farmers are demanding to purchase chillis through Markfed to get a better price to the farmers.

He said the farmers suffered heavy losses due to falling of chilli prices. He said the traders have purchased 60 per cent of chilli crops and assured that the government will extend the helping hand to the farmers. He further said that due to increase of chilli production prices have fallen.

Chilli traders Association President T Sambireddy urged the government to purchase chillies through Markfed. Cold Storage Units association president Prakash said that due to heavy stocks in the cold storage units, farmers and cold storage owners are getting losses. He urged the government take steps to purchase chilli stocks.

Agriculture Marketing commissioner P Mallikarjuna Rao, Markfed Managing Director Madhusudan Reddy, civil supplies department B Rajasekhar, Guntur district secretary Mannava Subba Rao were among the participated.
