Nellore: The ZP general body meeting held here on Saturday has witnessed heated arguments between TDP leaders and ZP Chairman Bommireddy Raghavendra Reddy here on Saturday. The members expressed anger over officials concerned for their failure to resolve drinking water woes in rural areas, especially in drought-hit mandals. A heated debate took place between the ZP Chairman and MLC Vakati Narayana Reddy.

The MLC demanded the ZP chief to take measures for providing drinking water and fodder to the cattle in rural areas. Meanwhile, MLC Vithapu Balasubrahmanyam questioned the officials whether they had prepared an action plan to supply drinking water in rural areas. “45 mandals out of 46 are facing severe drought conditions this year as the district received 63 percent deficit rainfall,” he added.

Vithapu demanded the state government to allocate more funds to supply drinking water in rural pockets as Rs 14.8 crore sanctioned by it is not sufficient. Agriculture Minister Somireddy Chandramohan Reddy stressed on the need for providing fodder to the cattle in rural areas.

“Proposals would be sent to the central and state governments on drought conditions seeking special funds to the district for managing the conditions,” he added.Agriculture Minister also said that they would convene a special meeting on drought in the district within next 10-15 days. “Chief Minister had also given permission to utilise dead storage water in the reservoirs for emergency and drinking water purposes,” said Municipal Minister P Narayana.

Superintending Engineer of the Rural Water Supply RV Krishna Reddy explained that plans were prepared with an estimated budget of Rs 31 crore to supply water. District in-charge Minister Sidda Raghava Rao, In-charge Collector A Md Imtiaz Ahmed, MLC Y Sreenivasulu Reddy, Sarvepalli MLA K Govardhan Reddy, Nellore Rural MLA K Sridhar Reddy, Udayagiri MLA B Rama Rao, Kovur MLA P Sreenivasulu Reddy, Sullurupeta MLA K Sanjeevaiah, DWMA PD D Haritha, DRDA PD Lavanyaveni and others were present.
