Penukonda (Anantapur): As many as 600 labourers, who are working under Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) from Adudhakulapalli and Islapuram aren’t getting wages for the past four months. There are instances where the officials rendered deaf ears to the appeals made the labourers in this regard.

They express despair stating that they had to starve on the festival days too as the officials give irrelevant answers to their pleas. The officials concerned are passing away the time rather than providing wages to the labourers. The labourers say that it would have been better for them if they had migrated to Bengaluru or Hosur.

It is learnt that the officials concerned showed negligent attitude to the representations of the labourers on the grievances day last week. Not being able to digest the behaviour of the officials, a person even attempted suicide using kerosene at the MRO office here.

There happened a verbal duel between the labourers and the officials as the latter weren’t moved by the incident.
Leaders of a few people’s associations criticised the government for not being able to implement its stance on developing the district. A few others blame the officials for diluting the major scheme of the central government.

They opine that the labourers would protest on a large scale if the problem persists. The government has to take steps to provide wages to the labourers in time, they say.
