Atmakuru: In all, 83 per cent of voters exercised their franchise in the by-poll to the second ward of the Nagara Panchayat on Sunday. The election was necessitated following the death of the second ward councilor Kuragayala Nabi of YSRCP. Both the TDP and YSRCP took the by-polls as a matter of prestige. In fact, the election appeared to be a full dress rehearsal for the next elections to the legislative Assembly.

There was bitter enmity between Srisailam MLA Budda Rajasekhara Reddy, who was elected on YSRCP ticket but later crossed over to the TDP, and his younger brother Budda Seshareddy, YSRCP incharge for Srisailam constituency. While the TDP fielded Nabirasool, the YSRCP candidate was Younis. The Congress fielded Sayyed Mabhu.

Sesha Reddy, while campaigning for the candidate, described the by-poll as referendum to style of functioning of the state government. An irate Seshareddy was seen quarrelling with officials near a polling booth in the Nagara Panchayat. The by-poll became a hot topic for the residents of the town.

Prohibitory orders have been clamped down on the town on account of the elections.Counting for the by-poll is scheduled on April 10. Meanwhile, contestants are exuding confidence of their victory in the poll.
