As far as the district is concerned, it has 136-kilometre coastline with 98 fishermen villages, hamlets and habitations.

4,000 to be paid as compensation to each fisherman

The department as part of implementation of the ban, began spreading awareness through distribution of pamphlets, announcements through loud speaker system and other means.According to Fisheries Department authorities, there are 3,000 mechanised and motor boats in the district besides 7,000 plus traditional boats.

While the mechanised boats venture deep into sea for 100 to 150 kilometres, while those using the traditional boats opt for fishing in the nearby sea water along the coast and they are mostly used by one or two fishermen taking up the fishing activity. In view of this, the Fisheries Department imposed the fishing ban on the first category of mechanized and motor boats only.

To ensure effective implementation of the ban, the Department pays Rs 4,000 as compensation to each of the fisher folk affected. Under this programme, 6 crew members will be covered for mechanised boats and 8 for motor boats. The Fisheries Department in association with marine police, revenue and coast guard will initiate measures for effective implementation of the ban. In case of violation, penalties wall be imposed besides departmental action.

East Godavari Fisheries Department Deputy Director Dr S Anjali said that the details of identified fishermen of the 3,000 boats, has been sent to the State Fisheries Department. The higher authorities assured to release the required funds at the
earliest, to pay the same to the fishermen, the DD clarified.
