According to Bhakarapet forest range officer Raghunath, forest personnel spotted around 20 smugglers at Yenugula Madugu carrying with RS logs while carrying out combing operations. The staff warned them to surrender, but smugglers started attacking them with stones. I

n self-defence, the armed personnel opened four rounds into the air. Following this, the smugglers fled from the spot but the forest personnel chased and could apprehend five of them along with 17 red sanders logs. One of those who was caught was a juvenile. Arrested smugglers have been identified as Chidambaram, 21, Ramar, 35, Annamalai, 27, Chinna Swamy, 25, and a juvenile offender (16), all of them hailing from Javadimalai hills in Tamil Nadu.

Forest officials intimated the arrest of juvenile to his parents over phone.Meanwhile, Red Sanders Anti-Smuggling Task Force (RASTF) personnel arrested two smugglers, K Murugan and V Karunaka of Tiruvannamalai district (Javadimalai hills) of Tamil Nadu and seized 10 red sanders logs near Yerragutta area of Bhakarapet forest, 50 km from Tirupati, on Sunday. The police party led by A V Subbaiah, FSO, came across the smugglers while conducting combing operation and apprehended them. The two were sent to judicial remand.
