Srikakulam: Although Srikakulam is notified as a Smart City, the proposed open drain project cries for attention due to insufficient funds. To discharge rain water on a quick pace, an open drain project was proposed three years ago in Srikakulam city as more than half of the area is situated in low lying area and rain water is stagnating during every rainy

To avoid that the open drain project was proposed and detailed project report (DPR) was prepared at an estimated cost of Rs 119 crore and total length of the drain is 70 km in and around the city. With the completion of the project, rain water would be discharged quickly and the open drain was proposed to cover Balaga, Vamsadhara Colony, Illisupuram, Bondilipuram, DCCBE Colony, Indiranagar Colony, Visakha-A, B Colonies, Mahalaxminagar, Compost Colony and other low lying areas.

The open drain would be connected to Mirthi Batti, Verri Batti Canals and rain water will be discharged into these canals through an open drain. But when it comes to funding, the government has allotted only Rs 35 crore in last week of March during 2016-17 financial year which is insufficient and will take some more years for completion of the project and residents of low lying areas have to bear rain water problem for some more years.

“Rain water is a major problem in our areas as it is stagnating the entire city during the rainy season,” explained Tammineni Anuradha, Chintada Sanjeevamma and Ponnada Dhanalaxmi residents of Illisupuram and DCCBE Colonies.“The Central government has sanctioned Rs 35 crore for open drain in the first phase and we will launch the works soon,” municipal engineer G Venkateswara Rao told The Hans India.
