Vizianagaram: The government has decided to construct underground drainage system in major panchayats also. As per the guide lines framed by the state government, the district administration has selected the villages which have crossed the population of 5,000 and as of now around 25 villages became eligible to avail the underground drainage system in the district.

This would be a boon for those villages as it would keep the surroundings clean and contain mosquito menace. The panchayat raj department has identified around 32 major villages in this district to lay underground drainage system, but they have finally selected 24 villages to implement this scheme and they have estimated that Rs 40 crore would be required to complete the scheme.

The government will provide 50 per cent funds under MGNREGS scheme and the rest of the funds should be spent from the accounts of major panchayats concerned. Duvvam, a village in Garividi mandal, is the one of those villages which was selected to implement the scheme.

Zilla Parishad chairperson Dr Swathi Rani, said: “This is a good scheme and we are ready to extend this to some other villages also in our district.”
