Visakhapatnam: Local girl M Sahithi Varshini has made country proud by winning two gold medals (under-10 year girls) in Classical and Blitz categories in Asian Youth Chess Championship held in Tashkent.Sahithi Varshini became the first girl from the region to win the medals at the Asian level.

Indian team ruled the roost at the Asian Youth Chess Championship by clinching 12 medals, including four gold medals. Varshini has qualified to play in the world cadet girls under-10 championship to be held in Brasilia in Brazil in August 2017. A third standard student of a private school in the city, Sahithi was initiated into chess around three years ago by her father-cum-coach Lokeswara Rao, a senior officer with the HPCL, and chess player Rama Kumar
