Visakhapatnam: AP Legislative Council Chairman A Chakrapani said Mahatma Gandhi was unique in this modern world to advocate non-violent methods for solving social, economic, political and religious problems.Addressing as a chief guest at the Centenary Celebrations of Mahatma Gandhi’s first Satyagraha at Champaran at GITAM University here on Monday, he suggested that Gandhi's Satyagraha needs to be understood as a method for solving conflicts and a method for fighting evil. Gandhian Satyagraha is a complete substitute for violence he added.

The Centenary Celebrations of Mahatma Gandhi’s first Satyagraha at Champaran was observed in a grand manner by the GITAM School of Gandhian Studies at GITAM University.GITAM President Dr MVVS Murthi pointed that Gandhi Satyagraha is more relevant today to solve the social evils. He mentioned that Gandhi had given great asset in the form of Satyagraha and all must follow his thoughts to further develop the country.

GITAM Chancellor Prof. K. Rama Krishna Rao said that Satyagraha was visualised by Gandhi as a more fundamental and perennial means of social transformation than war. He observed that Champaran Satyagraha is a symbol of non violence and human survive.Praja Spandana president and former civil servant CS Rao, AP Legislative Council Member Dwaram Pudi Jagadish, GITAM Chancellor Prof K Ramakrishna Rao, Vice-Chancellor Prof MS Prasada Rao, Gandhi Smriti and Darshan Samithi former Director Dr Savita Singh, Commissioner of Income Tax Bhupal Reddy and others participated in the meeting.

The students of GITAM School of Gandhian Studies conducted a field survey and came up with a documentary film titled “Farmers then and now”, highlighting the relevance of the Champaran Satyagraha and connecting it with the present day conditions of farmers. Events like Collage and Quiz were conducted to commemorate the celebrations which attracted participation from the students across the institutions. Gandhiji’s Satyagrahas were the main backdrop of these
competitions.
