New Delhi: YSRCP MP V Vijayasai Reddy, here on Monday demanded SC status for Dalit Christians. Speaking in Rajya Sabha, he said that Dalit Christians had been demanding SC status for a long time.
“The contention of the government was since they have changed their religion, they do not come under the category. These people were basically Dalits and there was nothing wrong if they got baptised,” he added. The AP Assembly had passed a Bill granting fishermen ST status in 1970 itself.
Though a Bill to this effect was introduced in Lok Sabha later and it was discussed for four days, it was withdrawn without taking any decision.
