The Sri Krishnadevaraya University (SKU) organised the 191st birth anniversary of Mahatma Jyothirao Phule on a grand note here at Phule Bhavan on Tuesday, under the guidance of Arts College Principal C N Krishna Naik and committee convener Prof Balasubramaniam.

SKU Vice-Chancellor (V-C) K Rajagopal, who attended as a chief guest, has praised the Phule as a social reformer. “Phule identified the importance of education and established the first girls school in the country,” he added. SKU Rector H Lajapathi Rai recalled that Ambedkar on many occasions claimed Phule as his guru and he was the person recognised as Mahatma by people. Lajapathi Rai proposed the Phule’s name for social exclusion and inclusion study centre. SKU Registrar K Sudhakar Babu praised the efforts of Phule, who strove to bridge the inequalities.

He said that he will try to establish Phule’s statue in the varsity premises. Retired professor R Chandrasekhar Reddy gave a call to people to serve the society by taking inspiration from Phule. Civil Supplies Officer Dr P Balakrishna said that Phule, who worked very hard for the expansion of education to downtrodden. He said that he would donate Rs 10,000 to the Phule’s charitable trust every year. Science College Principal Professor Ranga Swamy, teaching and non-teaching staff, research scholars and students attended the programme.
