Rajamahendravaram: Enthused by better price for tobacco in the auctions which began at tobacco auction centres recently, farmers are waiting for further rise in the prices to sell their produce. The average price for a kilogram at tobacco auction centre at Thorredu in East Godavari district for the last five days during the auction is Rs 153 against Rs 99 last year.

On April 6, the first day of auction, 18 bales of tobacco was put up for auction and one kg was sold for Rs 154 on an average. On April 7, the average price of one kg was Rs 153.70, it was Rs 154 on April 8 and on Tuesday, the price for kg was Rs 163. However, some farmers not satisfied with the price, took back their produce on Tuesday.

A total of 274 bales of tobacco was brought to Thorredu auction centre from April 6 and of which, 20 bales were taken back and the average price is Rs 154 with maximum of Rs 162 and minimum of Rs 92 was recorded. In total, 34,986 kilograms has been sold until now at Thorredu centre. Auction centre supervisor Subrahmanyam advised farmers to follow the guidelines to obtain good price. Auction will continue for another week in the open cluster system and 10 bales are being allowed per one baron.

“About 21,750 bales have been sold in the auction of 2015-16 and 27 lakh kg tobacco was auctioned with an average price of Rs 98.28 and 14 companies participate in the auction. This year, eight companies have taken part in the auction and average price is Rs 153 until now,”he said.
