Visakhapatnam: Around 7,000 girls from social welfare and AP residential schools danced their way to create Guinness record by performing Kuchipudi dance in Andhra University grounds in connection with Dr BR Ambedkar’s 125th birth anniversary on Tuesday morning. The girls were drawn from north Andhra Schools.

Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu was present on the occasion and declared the dance open. Speaking on the occasion, Naidu said the girls created history in the country and the state government felt proud to organise the event as a tribute to Ambedkar. He said earlier 6,117 girls participated in the dance that was performed in Vijayawada last year.

“I am impressed to see these girls who quickly learned the dance while concentrating on their studies and going on to create a record,’’ Naidu said.

He said Kuchipudi was a creation of Siddhendra Yogi and now the dance was being performed all over the world. It is now the responsibility of all to pass on this art to the future generations. “I hope each girl who performed here will teach another 100 girls so that every Telugu home will have one dancer,’’ Naidu said.

The Chief Minister pointed out that great dancers like Vedantam Raghavaiah, Uma Rama Rao, Korada Narasimha Rao, Vempati Chinasatyam and Sobharani took this dance form to new heights. He said people all over the world appreciated Srikrishna Parijatam, Menaka
Viswamitra, Ksheerasagara Mathanam, Chandalika, Bhamakalapam and Srikrishnaleelatarangam performed by these great Kuchupudi dancers.

Paying tributes to Dr Ambedkar, Naidu announced that the state government would set up a 125-feet high statue of Dr Ambedkar in Amaravati. He recalled that it was TDP founder and former Chief Minister N T Rama Rao who took the initiative in setting up social welfare and ashram schools which now have been spread all over the country. He felicitated secretary of APRSEI Col V Rama Rao on the occasion.
Social welfare minister Nakka Ananda Babu, Roads and Building Minister Ch Ayyanna Patrudu were present on the occasion.
