Guntur: Chilli farmers under the banner of CPI, AP Rythu Sangham and Andhra Pradesh Mirapa Rythu Sangham burnt chilli stocks in front of Mirchi Yard, here on Wednesday, to register their protest against falling prices.

Addressing the gathering, CPI joint secretary Muppalla Nageswara Rao demanded that the government should purchase chilli stocks from farmers immediately. He urged the government to purchase good quality chilli at Rs 10,000 per quintal, ordinary variety of chillies at Rs 8,000 per quintal in the back drop of falling prices.

“If the government fails to respond immediately, we will intensify agitation,” he warned and urged the government to open chilli purchasing centres in all mandals in chilli cultivating districts.

AP Rythu Sangham general secretary KVV Prasad demanded that the government should pay compensation of Rs 2,000 to the farmers in the back drop of falling prices. He urged the government to purchase chillies through Markfed besides paying compensation to the farmers who suffered heavy losses due to use of spurious chilli seeds.
