Visakhapatnam: The district unit of CPI(M) strongly condemned the arrest of senior leaders who were taken into custody in Pudimadaka village while trying to take part in the grama sabha convened to discuss on the controversial marine discharge pipeline at Pudimadaka on Thursday.

State committee leader Ch Narsinga Rao said the police imposed section 144 in the village terrorising the innocent fisherfolk who have been agitating against the pipeline in a peaceful manner. Narsinga Rao said the APIIC was speeding up its pipeline project while the fisherfolk have been opposing it as it would destroy the marine life and in the process affect their livelihood.
Rao said the former district collector N Yuvaraj announced that the fisherfolk would lose their livelihood if the pipeline was laid.

He also announced that employment would be better offer than compensation. But now the administration want to wash off their hands by paying a meagre compensation of Rs 1.25 lakh to each villager.``Without making an agreement on compensation and job assurance, the district administration is going ahead with the pipeline which is nothing but cheating the innocent fisherfolk,’’ Narsinga Rao said.
