Rajamahendravaram: SC/ST Commission chairman Karem Sivaji assured that he would extend efforts for the wellbeing of inmates of the central prison. He interacted with prisoners at jail, here on Thursday.Speaking on the occasion, Karem said that the state government was considering reducing sentence of prisoners and added that he would take the issue of reducing imprisonment from 14 years to 10 years to the notice of the Chief Minister.

He mentioned that many reforms were being implemented in prisons and the state government was taking all the steps for the welfare of the inmates of the prison. He informed that at present 1,400 inmates are in the central prison and 72 out of them are placed in the open air jail.

He inspected steel plant, tailoring department and garments being made in the prison. He also inspected kitchen and gardens.Jail superintendent Dr M Vara Prasad, deputy superintendent S Raja Rao, jailors B Ratna Raju and V Veerabhadrayya were also present.
