ZP chief responds on soak pits
In response to a report ‘soak pits turn garbage bins’ published in The Hans India on Tuesday, ZP Chairperson Girvani Chandra Prakash has instructed the officials concerned to take steps for restoring rainwater soak pits across the district. She inspected a soak pit in the ZP office premises here on Thursday and expressed dismay over its lack of maintenance
Chittoor: In response to a report ‘soak pits turn garbage bins’ published in The Hans India on Tuesday, ZP Chairperson Girvani Chandra Prakash has instructed the officials concerned to take steps for restoring rainwater soak pits across the district. She inspected a soak pit in the ZP office premises here on Thursday and expressed dismay over its lack of maintenance.

The ZP chief recalled that district had secured the first place in the state for construction of 1.36 lakh soak pits. She stated that Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu had sanctioned funds for construction of soak pits to recharge groundwater. Speaking to The Hans India here on Thursday, the ZP chairperson said that she would give instructions to the DWMA officials to restore soak pits so that they may not turn into garbage bins.
She stressed on the need to recharge groundwater levels as there are no perennial rivers in the district. “All the 65 mandals in the district were declared drought-hit as crops affected due to lack of water,” she added. The ZP chief further said a comprehensive report was sent to the state government to release funds for resolving drinking water shortage in the district. The ZP had spent Rs 56 crore for supplying drinking water through tankers in villages facing acute shortage. ZP Accounts Officer Venkataratnam, Superintendent Prabhakara Reddy and other officials have accompanied Girvani.
