Kakinada: Groundwater levels in East Godavari noticed only a slight depletion despite there was a huge shortfall in rain in the corresponding period from April 2016 to April 2017. Efforts under NTR Jalasiri are said to have made it possible to contain the groundwater levels loss to a mere 0.33 meters at an average.

Though rain was noticed at a minus 26 percent of average rainfall in the district, according to groundwater department sources, district average water level has only depleted to 9.43 meters this year (till April) from 9.10 meters in April 2016.
The effective measures in the last couple of years in both agency and upland areas in the form of construction of check dams, water soak pits, water ponds and desilting of water tanks are said to have played key role in the ground water recharge.

East Godavari ground water and water audit department assistant engineer TVV Satyanarayana said they would conduct water audit again in June 2017 from the corresponding period in 2016. We conduct these surveys by scientific process, he clarified.
