​Maredumilli (East Godavari): Tragedy struck, when four tribal children died as their hut caught fire due to alleged negligence of a neighbour. The grandfather of the children was also severely injured in the accident, while he made a vain bid to rescue them.

This incident took place in Chiripena Lova hamlet near Banda village of Maredumilli mandal in East Godavari district late on Sunday.

Bacchala Lacchi Reddy and Bacchala Padmavathi are living in Chiripena Lova, 30 kilometres away from mandal headquarters of Maredumilli. They have four children, Rajeswari (6), Rambabu (3), Rama Lakshmi (1) and Rami Reddy (1). The family was making a living by cultivating on the hill slopes.

Lacchi Reddy went into the forest to get toddy on Sunday evening and her wife Padmavathi went to fetch water from a nearby stream leaving their children in the hut.

Meanwhile, Palla Devi Reddy, who is residing nearby started a fire to cook but due to heavy winds, a spark flew to the adjoining hut, where the children were staying. Within no time fire engulfed the hut, leaving no chance for children to escape.

Pandu Reddy, the grandfather of the children, who was working nearby rushed to the spot and tried to save the children but he was severely injured in the incident.

The incident came into light on Monday morning. The police and revenue officials have rushed to the spot as per the directions of Rampa Chodavaram ITDA project officer A Dinesh Kumar. A case has been registered.
