Pithapuram: The clouded sky might bring respite to people from the scorching heat, but is a cause of worry to paddy growers in the region. The overcast clouds followed by sporadic drizzling across the district on Tuesday, created panic among farmers. The paddy is grown inasmuch as 1.6 hectares in the district. The crop is ready for the harvest and almost 50 per cent of cutting was completed. Around 20 per cent of farmers have already gathered their crop while the remaining kept their heaps of crop in the fields.

Many farmers are worried that, a sudden fall of rain at this crucial time would only ruin their hard work.A majority of the farmers have hurried to shift the harvest to the shelters but the scarcity of labour has become a major hindrance for them. The happiness of the farmers upon yielding 40-45 sacks per acre is fading with the appearance of clouds. Being in the last phase of farming, involving just another week’s work, the change in the weather is causing anxiety among farmers.

The sudden shower at Pithapuram, Routhulapudi, Rajanagaram, Rajavommangi, Prathi-padu and Jaggampet mandals has already annoyed the farming community. But on the other hand, agriculture officials allay the fears saying the drizzles would not affect the standing crop. They even pointed out that there was no forecast of rain by the Met department.
