Atmakur (Kurnool): Giving face-lift to the Kolanu Bharati Temple should have been completed by the pushkarams to the Krishna river last year, but the works dragged beyond the deadline because of a row between Endowments department and Forest department over the temple landed area and continued negligence by contractor.

Highlights:

  • Lack of coordination between Endowments and Forest departments have clouded the temple development works.
  • Mantap in front of the sanctum-sanctorum of the temple has been pulled down but was not rebuilt.

It may be recalled that District Collector Ch Vijay Mohan released Rs 1.75 crore to pull down the old structure and construct a new temple at the existing site. The Endowments department got 80 per cent of the old temple structure has been pulled down and afterwards conveniently ignored the temple rebuilding work. A contractor belonging to Chittoor district was shortlisted. Ever since, he bagged the tender a year ago and his address was not known.

On the landed area of the temple, the Endowments department puts it as 6.4 acres, while the Forest department put the area of the land at 3,000 square yards. It was proposed to lay a black top road at a cost of RS 1 crore for about 2 km all around the temple, but the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) objected to laying of the road on the grounds that a tiger was on prowl.

The District Collector, while reviewing the temple works in July 2016, instructed that development of cottages, dormitories, guest houses should be taken up at cost of Rs 42 lakh by the Tourism department as part of the temple development master plan. Endowments engineering officials are allegedly not paying attention to the temple development works.

Some of the temple mantaps have been built up to the roof level, while the mantap in front of the sanctum-sanctorum of the temple has been pulled down but was not rebuilt. Lack of coordination between government departments has clouded the temple development works. Devotees have been demanding the Endowments department secretary Anuradha to pay attention to the delay and take up remedial measures.
