CPM activists, including party secretariat member Y Venkateswara Rao and East Krishna secretary R Raghu, were arrested by police as they staged a dharna at Sriharipuram of Mudinepalli on Gudivada – Kaikaluru Highway in Krishna district on Tuesday opposing digging of illegal prawn tanks at Chevuru and Devaram villages of Mudinepalli mandal.

Vijayawada: CPM activists, including party secretariat member Y Venkateswara Rao and East Krishna secretary R Raghu, were arrested by police as they staged a dharna at Sriharipuram of Mudinepalli on Gudivada – Kaikaluru Highway in Krishna district on Tuesday opposing digging of illegal prawn tanks at Chevuru and Devaram villages of Mudinepalli mandal.


Venkateswara Rao, Raghu, RCP Reddy, Rajesh and others were sent to Mudinepalli police station. In the evening, police released them and filed a case against them.About 7, 000 acres of fertile land was converted into prawn culture in the name of fish tanks. With this, tanks caused pollution of drinking water and ground water.

Though the High Court given an interim order to stop the construction of prawn culture tanks and the revenue authorities did not take any action on illegal prawn culture tanks.Villagers of Devaram and Chevuru, activists of Vyavasaya Karmika Sangham and others under the leadership of CPM staged a protest opposing digging of illegal prawn culture tanks.
