He formally launched Neeru-Pragathi programme at Sri Venkateswara Kasturba Kalakshetram here on Thursday. Speaking on the occasion, the Collector said water bodies have to be de-silted on war foot basis for preserving every drop of water during monsoon.

He stated that the NREGS programme has to be used effectively for taking up water conservation measures. He expressed happiness over the recent announcement of the Meteorological department that the upcoming monsoon would be normal this year.The Collector suggested for de-silting check dams, tanks, soak pits for preserving maximum water. He asked officials to take measures for water preservation in the next 90 days. MLC V Narayana Reddy stated that the officials and people should support the initiative of the Chief Minister for water conservation.

He said that there are many tanks that were built during Sri Krishnadevaraya regime and they have to be spruced up for storing more quantity of water. MLC B Ravi Chandra said water conservation is not primary responsibility of the government but it is the duty of people. He said 10 lakh acres of lands are being cultivated in the district now and the state government is planning to add two lakh more acres of lands by improving water resources.

Joint Collector-2 Ranjit Basha, Deputy Director Ramesh, DWMA Project Director P Haritha, Irrigation SE Srinivasulu, Joint Director of Agriculture Hema Maheswara Rao and other senior officials were present. Prior to the meeting, a rally was organised from New ZP office to Kasturba Kalakshetram for creating awareness on need for water conservation.
