Bhimavaram: Despite police denying permission, villagers of Tundurru started indefinite fast on Friday opposing the Mega Aqua Food Park. As such tension prevailed in the village in Bhimavaram mandal.The police tried to prevent the villagers from taking part in indefinite fast. The Anti Aqua Park Committee has applied to Narsapuram DSP seeking permission to take up indefinite fast in the village against the setting up of the aqua park.On Friday morning, committee convenor Areti Subrahmanyam (Vasu) tried to make arrangements for the fast but the police force gathered there in no time.

They took Chide Bhaskar Rao, Yallabandi Nagababu, Thota Ramakrishna, Addala Chanti and Addala Murali into custody and shifted them to Mogaltur Police station. The police removed the hunger strike tent.Committee convenor Areti Vasu protested against the police highhandedness and climbed the overhead tank near the Mandal Parishad Primary School. Following this, within a few minutes, other villagers also moved towards the overhead tank. Sensing trouble, the police brought nets from Bhimavaram besides fire tenders.

Narsapuram CI Ramachandra Rao talked to Vasu over the phone and requested him to get down and discuss the matter with him.The committee convenor demanded that the police should allow them to continue their fast in the village and release the arrested villagers immediately. Besides, he also demanded withdrawal of the police force from the village. Narsapur DSP Ch Poornachandra Rao also came to Tundurru and talked to Vasu over the phone and requested him to get down from the overhead tank but in vain.

Vasu’s mother Areti Satyavati also arrived at the spot and started her fast under the overhead tank. At the same time, CPM state secretariat member V Umamaheswara Rao, district committee secretary B Balaram, secretariat member JNV Gopalan, AIDWA district President D Kalyani and CPM leader BV Varma also reached the water tank and started fast under the scorching sun. Following this, the villagers including women reached the place and participated in the fast. Narsapuram sub-collector Sumith Kumar Gandhi reached Tundurru and tried to discuss the issue with the agitators. However, Vasu insisted that the sub-collector should provide an assurance to stop the factory works.Meanwhile, the police tried to evict the agitators from the place.

This has led to a scuffle between the villagers and police.Later, the police released the arrested leaders and returned the tent and other material. Following this, convener Vasu came down from the tank and started fast at the tent along with other leaders.The leaders announced that the fast will continue in the night also. CPM state leader V Umamaheswara Rao garlanded the villagers who participated in the fast.
