Eluru: The district administration is set to take steps to complete the long-pending Ponangi Puntha, an Irrigation channel that supplies water to 120 acres in Eluru rural mandal.The Ponangi Puntha, a century-old irrigation channel completely silted up due to the negligence of the governments over decades. Congress government led by YS Rajasekhar Reddy laid the foundation stone for the renovation of this channel to supply irrigation and drinking water to Jalipudi, Lingaraogudem, Chataparru, Komadavole, Madepalli and other villages.

However, even after a decade, the works were not complete causing hardships to the ayacut under this channel. Last May, the declaration for the land acquisition of 2.35 acres in Chataparru village had been taken up by the Revenue officials. Thought the present collector K Bhaskar repeatedly warned the officials to take up the works which are still in the cold storage. The collector directed the officials to complete the Ponangi Puntha irrigation channel so that the channel would supply water to the 1,200 acres of ayacut.

He also said the channel would be named after Maganti Subhash Chandra Bose, a farmers’ leader of Chataparru who fought for the renovation of this irrigation channel. The collector addressed a review meeting with the officials on the irrigation projects in the district held at Collectorate on Saturday.Besides Ponangi Puntha, the collector directed the water resources department to complete the Nabipet Canal works by May 12. He also directed Eluru RDO Chakradhara Rao to visualise the field works every day in three phases and engage the VROs for this work and to upload those videos.

Collector expressed his unhappiness over the non-completion of Pogonda Reservoir over last 10 years and directed the officials to complete the works during this season and supply water to 4,000 acres in rabi season. He said he would write a letter to sanction the additional amount of Rs 1.27 crore for the land acquisition of Pogonda reservoir. He also directed the officials to take up the check dam works across Tammileru and complete works of Seshavataram Channel within 40 days and to speed up the field channels of Tadipudi, Chintalapudi Lift Irrigation schemes.In-charge Joint collector Katta Hymavathi, Additional Joint Collector MH Sheriff, Sub-Collectors Shanmohan, Sumith Kumar Gandhi, RDOs B Srinivasa Rao, G Chakradhara Rao, S Lavanna, and Irrigation SE K Srinivas Rao participated.
