Visakhapatnam: The district unit of Andhra Pradesh United Teachers’ Federation (APUTF) at an open round table organised near the Gandhi statue here on Sunday demanded that the government roll back its proposal of cancelling Telugu medium in municipal schools.

Initiating the discussion, UTF district president Y A R K Prasad disclosed that the state government, which issued the GO Ms No. 14 on January 2 scrapping Telugu medium in municipal schools, immediately withdrew the proposal following severe protests from teachers’ unions. He said the government is again making arrangements for introducing English medium from the academic year 2017-18 itself and as a part of it, Municipal Commissioner M Harinarayanan also held an awareness meeting with the parents and children at the NMCH school recently.

Stating that children will easily understand the theme of the subject when it was taught in mother tongue, Prasad said they could acquire adequate knowledge to continue their higher studies in any medium. In states like Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Kerala, too, the children were being taught in their respective mother tongue and those states are ahead of Andhra Pradesh in the education sector, he added.
