Eluru: A tense situation prevailed in Hanuman Nagar area in Eluru City, following the women’s agitation against the opening of liquor shop near their habitats. The women warned the organisers to remove the liquor shop in their area immediately or otherwise they have to face dire consequences.

According to local people and eyewitnesses, Yareakala Raghupatamma, a 70-year-old woman applied for liquor shop in the rural area. She was allotted the shop at Hanuman Nagar in Venkatapuram Panchayati. After paying required amounts, she tried to set up the shop 24 days back. At the same time, the women living in surrounding areas objected her and demanded to stop the establishment of the shop in their area. The women started agitation against the establishment of the liquor shop among their habitats.

On Monday, when the owners of the liquor shop tried to open the shop, the women obstructed and raised slogans against the shop and warned the organisers of dire consequences if they opened the shop near their houses. The AIDWA district president D Rajyalakshmi, P Durga and others also reached the spot and supported the agitating women. As verbal duel took place between organisers and the local women, a tense situation prevailed.

The Excise Sub Inspector Katyayani reached the spot with her staff and closed the shop. The women later reached the Excise Deputy Commissioner office and staged a dharna demanding the closure of liquor shop in their area. The Deputy Commissioner assured them of necessary action in this regard.
