Vijayawada: The runway expansion work of the Gannavaram Airport is going on at brisk pace and is expected to be completed by 2018. The present runway is 1074 metres and would be extended to 3360 metres. The Airports Authority of India is spending Rs. 160 crore for extension of the runway. The expansion work started early 2017 and is going on in full swing.

Gannavaram Airport Director Madhusudhan Rao speaking to The Hans India, said at present Boeing 737 services with a passenger capacity of about 200 is being operated on the present runway. He further said that once the extension of the runway is completed bigger flights with more passenger capacity can be operated to increase the passenger traffic.
He further added that Boeing 747 and Boeing 777 flights will be operated once the expansion of the runway is complete with passenger capacity of 350 to 430, he added.

He informed that at present there are 36 movements per day, with 18 take offs and 18 landings at the Airport. He said that there was an increase in the passengers travelling by flights every year. He said that in the year 2014-15 the passenger traffic was 2.33 lakhs and increased to 4 lakh by 2015-16 with increase of 71 percent.

He further said that in the year 2016-17 there was an increase of 64 percent of passenger traffic with 6.50 lakh passengers using the airport. He hoped the traffic would reach one million by the end of 2018. He further said that once the expansion work is complete and the work at the International capital Amaravati picks up there would be a steep increase in the passenger travelling by flights he added.
