Amaravati: The AP Assembly will conduct a special session sometime in May second week to ratify the Constitution Amendment (122nd) Bill for the Goods and Services Tax (GST), Speaker Kodela Sivaprasada Rao said. Telangana is far ahead of AP as far as backing of the Centre in pushing through the bill sometime back.
At least 16 out of 31 state Assemblies, including Union Territories of Delhi and Puducherry, need to pass the bill with a simple majority enabling the Centre to seek the President’s consent. It is unlikely to be a difficult task for the NDA regime due to the fact that 13 states are under the ruling of the BJP.
The Speaker told the media persons here on Tuesday that the schedule of the special session will be announced after the release of gazette notification by the Centre on GST.Earlier, he chaired a meeting in connection with the drafting of Amaravati Declaration on women empowerment, a commitment pronounced by the Speaker himself at the National Women’s Parliament held in the capital in February last.
The draft containing issues concerning the women and a roadmap for their empowerment will be submitted to the government for implementation, he explained. An advisory committee headed by Sumita Dawra, Principal Secretary, Roads and Buildings Department was constituted to prepare the draft declaration. NGOs, Professors, Industrialists and government officials will be involved in the exercise.
