Hence, Mayor Koneru Sreedhar and officials of Vijayawada Municipal Corporation expressed their displeasure over the slow pace of works.

Vijayawada: With just one month left to end summer, the much awaited storm water drainage works in the city seems may not be completed before the onset of monsoon. Though L&T has taken up the project, the works are going on at a snail’s pace. Hence, Mayor Koneru Sreedhar and officials of Vijayawada Municipal Corporation expressed their displeasure over the slow pace of works. The storm water drainage is very essential to the city as most parts of the Old City face inundation problem. Some areas in Two Town such as Mogalrajpuram, Autonagar, Pinamaneni Poly Clinic Road and some other areas are also facing the same problem.

The Union government has sanctioned Rs 461.04 crore to the storm water drainage works two years ago and set deadline to complete the works within three years. The Vijayawada Municipal Corporation has to bear an additional cost if the works will not be completed within the deadline. Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitely laid the foundation stone to the works on October 28, 2016 during his visit to Amaravati.

The storm water drain to be built within the radius of 69 kilometres and the city is divided into seven basins for which separate designs were formulated. The corporation has set work target of 1.70 km per day to the contract company. However, Mayor Sreedhar said that the total work till now did not exceed 1.70 km which was pity. “Works will not be completed before the beginning of rainy season if they continue such a slow pace,” he lamented.

The corporation engineers found that concrete work was completed for just 25 metres on ‘A’ convention road against the total target of 600 metres. While 25 metres of works were completed on Y V Rao Hospital road against the total target of 84 metres.The works on Mahanadu Road is not going well though the city town planning section gave encroachment clearance. Likewise, concrete works were completed for just 47 metres on Currencynagar Road.

“The contract agency said that non- availability of labourers is the reason for lagging behind for not completing the works on time,” an engineer said.The same situation was witnessed at Karmelnagar, Singnagar and on M B Stadium Road.Mayor Sreedhar said there was need to speed up works as just one month left for monsoon season. “The works will not be completed before beginning of rainy season if they contract agency continue the slow pace” he said.
