Visakhapatnam: Andhra University Vice-Chancellor Prof G Nageswara Rao called upon teachers, research scholars and non-teaching staff to rededicate themselves to revive the past glory of the 92-year-old academic institution.Paying rich tributes to the great Vice-Chancellors Sir C R Reddy and Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, who had laid strong academic and research foundation, to mark the Andhra University Foundation Day here on Wednesday, Prof Nageswara Rao said that public universities were facing severe fund crunch and unhealthy competition from the private funded universities.

He said that as a public university, rules and regulations should be followed keeping public service in mind whereas private universities are free to run their show with a profit-oriented objective. About the development activities taken up after he assumed charge as Vice-Chancellore, he said that the Andhra University Alumni Association was strengthened by providing spacious office premises with modern facilities to conduct the annual alumni meet on every December 12 to give more emphasis on infrastructure development and laboratories.

He disclosed that a 50-beded hospital, new hostel buildings, gym and a sports hostel are in the offing and a new hostel will accommodate 600 students of College of Engineering for Women. “We have established an Open Innovation Centre, first of its kind in the country on the university campus. Taken steps for introduction of battery-run vehicles, hydraulic lifts, free mess facility and other concessions for differently abled students and research scholars”, he added.
