Vijayawada: Transport Minister K Atchannaidu said that police and transport department officials would conduct special drives once in a week in all districts to ensure strict implementation of traffic rules and bring down the accidents.He mentioned that the state government had created eight teams in all districts with transport and police department officials to discuss measures to prevent road accidents under the leadership of District Collector.

These meetings would be held on every third Tuesday. The Minister accompanied by Home Minister N Chinarajappa conducted a review meeting on road safety at the DGP office here on Wednesday. Officials of Roads & Buildings, Police and Transport departments discussed on how to reduce road accidents in the State.

Later, addressing the mediapersons, Atchannaidu said that the state government would conduct breath analyser tests to all vehicle drivers at 25 toll plazas on the national highways.The government identified nearly 11,000 black spots in the state and national highways and special measures would be taken within two months to prevent accidents, he added.He mentioned that the state government was planning to form Road Safety Board with sufficient funds for reviewing road accidents and creating awareness on traffic rules.

“Vizianagaram district (GMR College) and Visakhapatnam district (GITAM College) students conducted a survey from Icchapuram to Visakhapatnam (nearly 300 km) to find out the causes for road accidents during the last 10 years onwards and the state government would send the study report to all District Collectors in a bid to bring down the road accidents in all districts,” he added.

He said that lorry owners should appoint experienced drivers. Two drivers should be on duty while take the trucks to other States. “Two-wheeler riders must wear helmets because nearly 3,000 two-wheelers riders died in accidents in 2016 and 30,000 people became handicapped as they did not wear helmets while they were driving. Four wheeler drivers must use the seat belt and the state government would remove all wine shops on national highways after completion of their licence term,” he added.

Home Minister N Chinarajappa said that all sections of people must be aware of the traffic rules to prevent accidents and they should extend support to police and transport officials while they conduct special drives to make the state accident-free.
He said that state government would create awareness on traffic rules among students at all colleges and schools for reducing accidents.Director General of Police N Sambasiva Rao, Transport Commissioner N Bala Subramanyam and Roads and Building department officials were present.
