Tirupati: Once again it was proved that the movement of smugglers rise with the movement of any VIP in the city, as police and forest stay busy with their protocol duties. Minister for Environment, Forests, Science & Technology, Sidda Raghava Rao visited Tirupati on Thursday. All the officers of the Task Force and forest were with the minister throughout the day. Obviously, the smugglers who have close watch on taskforce officials’ movement in the city tried their luck in the wee hours of Friday.

  • Logs loaded in a colony near Karakambadi Road
  • Daring attempt by the smugglers, as the Task Force team was busy with the visit of the Minister

On Friday early morning, at Bank colony, a luggage auto was speeding towards the main road. The Task Force team lead by RSI Vijay and DRO Durga Ram Prasad tried to stop it but the driver of the vehicle gave a slip and escaped towards the road. The task force team, who are well trained and used to tackling such incidents, chased the vehicle. With this the driver of the vehicle, jumped down the running vehicle and ran into the colony. Constables Prasad and Srinivas chased the suspect and caught him. The suspect sustained a small injury on his forehead while the PCs did, on their elbows and fingers.

One more suspect, who seemed to be piloting the luggage auto too escaped from there leaving his Scooty behind.
On observation, it was known that the luggage auto bearing no AP 03CD 5918 was loaded with 39 logs. IGP Sri Kantha Rao IPS visited the scene and congratulated the team. The important thing was that the scene of offence is located in a busy residential area, very near to AP Forest Department's Biotechnology Research Centre (BIOTRIM) and next to a popular hotel.

It is anybody’s guess how the smugglers could dare to load red sander logs in such an area, unless there is a close watch on the teams or support from any black sheep in the Task Force team. On interrogation, the suspect disclosed himself as Nayum of Kondamitta, Chittoor town. He revealed that one smuggler from Tirupati offered him with Rs 5,000 if he could safely get the RS loaded vehicle away from Tirupati town. Nayum said that he thought that it was just a matter if 10 minutes but failed to anticipate the consequences.
