  • Commuters are having nightmarish experience to cross the bypass road during peak hours due to haphazard parking by private travel buses
  • Private buses are plying on roads from 6 pm as against 8.30 pm
  • Several instances of commuters entering into an argument with private bus operators

With officials turning blind eye, the mini bypass road has become a permanent parking place for private buses especially during night time. The bypass road which runs parallel to GNT road in the city was designed to relieve pressure on the main road for taking immediate diversion for commuters who move towards distant parts of the city spread on southern side of the city leading up to Ayyappa Temple, Bujabuja Nellore and Podalakur Road.

Usually, GNT road gets huge traffic in the morning and evening hours and the bypass road serves as an alternative route for commuters. Taking advantage of less traffic on the bypass road, as many as 15 to 20 private travel agencies have been operating their offices between Ramalingapuram Junction up to Balajinagar cross road close to Vijaya Mahal gate. They issue tickets for travelling up to Hyderabad, Visakhapatnam, Vijayawada, Guntur, Kurnool, Tirupati, Bengaluru and Chennai.

Previously, they were using road from Netaji Statue to railway station close to Simhapuri Hotel which was owned by the railways for operating these services. But, the owners tactfully changed the venue completely relying on the mini bypass road. From 7 pm onwards, private buses occupy more space on bypass road leading to traffic jam till midnight. “Why traffic police are allowing private travel buses to ply on city roads from 6 pm onwards,” asked P Ramachandra Rao, who is an assistant to an advocate.

As per traffic rules, heavy vehicles with load will be allowed to enter into the city only after 8.30 pm via mini bypass road. But, private buses were being allowed even from 6 pm onwards. When these buses reach to Vijayamahal Gate centre on the mini bypass road, traffic is being blocked due to congestion of roads. There were several instances of commuters entering into an argument with private bus operators. When contacted, an official from Traffic wing said they were taking measures to regulate traffic during peak hours.
