With the rising temperatures in the city, the veterinary doctors are suggesting to the owners of the pet animals to take care of their pet dogs, cats and other animals. The animals, too, will be affected and fall ill due to harsh weather conditions if proper care is not taken by the owners.

Assistant director of animal husbandry department Dr V Madhu Babu suggested that the all animals should be kept under shade and should not be exposed to sun during the afternoon. Referring to the cases received by the veterinary hospital in the city, he said many animals are brought with high temperature due to sunstroke. Fresh and cold water should be provided to the animals to cool their bodies. Tics and lies infection complaints are more in summer and due to that the animals become anemic, he added.

Dr Madhu Babu further stated that complaints in the pet animals would be digestive related and skin allergy problems. He said that the state veterinary hospital is rendering many services to the animals. He said surgeries are performed on animals such as cesarean operations both in large animals and dogs, ovarian hysterectomy in dogs, mammary tumor operation in dogs, hematoma operation in dogs, fractures and dislocation corrections in canines, patellar dichotomy in buffaloes, horn amputations in large animal, suturing for lacerated wound, castration in dogs were the common surgery performed at the hospital, he added.

He said that it is observed that 40 per cent cases had increased after starting two shifts and the owners of the animals are satisfied with the treatment. Vijaya, owner of a pet dog, said that the treatment at the VHV is good and the doctors are very caring in treating the animals.
