Eluru: State Director General of Police (DGP) N Sambasiva Rao said tight security arrangements had been made at the Polavaram Project site near Ramaiahapeta in Polavaram mandal, following the threat from extremists.The DGP, who visited Eluru district police office here on Sunday, said the naxals were on the rampage at Visakhapatnam district and had burnt the earth moving machines which were used for forming roads. In view of these attacks, it was decided to provide high security to Polavaram Project area and additional forces would also be deployed at the site.

He said that the police department was giving highest priority to road safety and steps are taken towards minimising the road accidents. As part of this, on May 3, Road Safety Project would be launched across the state. A review meeting with all district superintendents of police, DIGs, IGs would be conducted on Tuesday at Amaravati. This meeting would be attended by home minister, transport minister, transport commissioner, principal secretaries of transport and home. In this meeting, an action plan would be chalked out on how to control the road accident .

He pointed out that as a pilot project, the road safety project was started in West Godavari district three months ago and 13 road safety vehicles had been allotted to the district exclusively. Another six vehicles were also provided to West Godavari district, he added, saying that so far the results were satisfactory in respect to Road Safety Project. He said accidents were down by 25 per cent after the implementation of the project.

Sambasiva Rao stated that every year 25,000 road accidents are taking place in the state and the aim was to bring down the number by 50 per cent by 2020. He said that the police department had identified the black zones where a high number of accidents took place. It was decided to put the black zone sign boards in 41 identified spots in West Godavari district and industrialists and other donors came forward to put the boards, he said.

Eluru Range DIG P V S Ramakrishna, S P Bhaskar Bhushan were also present. Earlier, the DGP conducted a meeting with police officials in the district on Road Safety Project that was introduced three months ago in the district.
