Amaravati: Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu said that if groundwater level is increased up to eight metres it would reduce the power consumption for irrigation needs up to 50 per cent.

Participating in a review meeting on Neeru-Pragathi programme with officials here on Tuesday, he said that water preservation is very important in many ways.

Explaining his experiences during West Godavari tour, he said that power consumption for agriculture needs could be reduced by increasing groundwater level. He asked the officials to allocate one engineer for every mandal for Neeru-Pragathi programme. If sufficient staff is not available, the services of retired employees should be utilised for monitoring the works.

He said that apathy of some staff should not cause any obstacles in achieving the goals of the government. Questioning delay in Panta Sanjeevani and Vermi Compost works which have completed only up to 29 per cent so far, he asked the officials to speed up the works.

The Chief Minister expressed displeasure over speed of works dropping from 120 per cent to 80 per cent in districts like Anantapur, Kurnool and Chittoor.

Admitting that the recent transfers of Collectors was also one of the reasons behind the slow pace of works, he expressed satisfaction over the brisk pace of works in Krishna and Srikakulam districts.

The officials were instructed to complete employment guarantee scheme works on war-footing basis, the delay would have an impact on cost of works and materials.

He directed the officials to ensure implementation of works related to housing and other schemes in the villages without any lapses. The Chief Minister asked the officials to discuss with cement companies over prices.

On the other hand, Chief Secretary Dinesh Kumar directed the officials to take steps to complete construction of 10 lakh houses in the villages. He said that one official should monitor every 250 houses. Several officials, legislators and public representatives were present at the meeting.
