Tirupati: The May Day celebrated with enthusiasm across the district on Monday. Various labour unions organised programmes separately and reiterated their rights. The AITUC organised a public meeting in Tirupati in which CPI district secretary A Ramanaidu addressing the gathering. He gave a call to the labourers to put up a united fight to protect their rights. The CPI leader asked the labourers to teach a lesson for rulers if they tried to suppress their rights.

AITUC district general secretary R Harikrishna said that the governments were in the hands of corporate forces and looting the labourers. It is the time for farmers, labourers and others to fight against the governments. He demanded special acts for labour force like ensuring 8 working hours in a day. Every labourer should be provided a house and free education for his children and medical facilities for entire family. This is the moral responsibility of the governments, he averred.

Party leaders hoisted flags at various places in and around the city including Krishnapuram Thana, Nalugukalla Mandapam, Indira Priyadarsini Vegetable Market, Leela Mahal, RTC Bus Stand, Tiruchanur, Peruru, Indira Nagar and at several auto stands. CPI city secretary Chinnam Penchalaiah, N Sreeramulu, K Radhakrishna, N Chandrasekhar Naidu and K Sivareddy were among those present.

The CITU also celebrated the May Day celebrations. Speaking on the occasion, its leader Kandarapu Murali and others criticised the state and the central governments for suppressing the rights of the labourers. The CITU will launch an agitation from grass-root level if the governments try to dilute the labour laws.
