Tirupati: In a dramatic development, five of the accused in the case registered by Yerpedu police under AP Mines Act, for involvement in the illegal sand mining in Swarnamukhi River, were taken into custody in Srikalahasti, 40 km from here on Monday.

Highlights:

  • Key accused Chiranjeevulu Naidu and Subramanyam Naidu were among those nabbed
  • Five were detained near the court in Srikalahasti
  • Hunt is on to apprehend 8 others, who are followers of Bojjala

The five who are TDP activists include Chiranjeevulu Naidu, Subramanyam Naidu, Bhaskar Naidu, Muniratnam Naidu and Venkataratnam Naidu allegedly involved in the large scale illegal mining of sand from Swarnamukhi River in Yerpedu and Thottambedu mandals of Srikalahasti constituency.

According to sources, the five were whisked away by the police immediately after they were detained near the court in Srikalahasti and were taken to an undisclosed place. Unconfirmed sources say the five were planning to surrender in the court which the police got scent of it resulting in their detention.

However, police were tight lipped on the nabbing of the five who are the kingpins of the sand mafia operating in Srikalahasti constituency, looting the natural resource from the river which was not unexpected as Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu himself came out openly against them at media conference in New Delhi following the nationwide outcry on the tragic Yerpedu incident in which 12 farmers from Munagalapalem fighting against the sand mafia were killed in a road accident on April 21.

Bowing to vociferous demand from the political parties seeking stern action on the TDP activists involved in the illegal sand mining from Swarnamukhi River, the TDP government saw the police registered the case under 41, 42 and 43 of AP Mines Act, three days after the April 21 incident and also placed Yerpedu Tahasildar Venkatrayulu suspension and transferred police officers including Yerpedu CI Sainath and SI Ramakrishna.

Meanwhile, 8 more accused in the illegal sand mining case including the prime accused and former ZPTC member and close followers of former Minister and MLA Bojjala Gopalakrishna Reddy were still at large. Danamjaya Naidu is away in USA before the Yerpedu incident. The incident which triggered nationwide uproar put the TDP government in bad light and turned the heat on it to act against the sand mafia.
