Visakhapatnam: The school bus that mowed down a famous writer Dusi Dharma Rao on Sunday evening at Novotel hotel junction and injured his police officer son was in perfect condition and it was only the negligence of the driver and cleaner that led to the mishap, according to preliminary investigation held on Monday.

The police in their initial investigation found that the brakes and the vehicle were in good condition. The bus rolled down at very high speed and rammed the parapet wall of the beach road.According to police officials, the bus ferried around 20 to 25 school students to a private programme to a hotel on the Beach Road. After dropping the students, the driver parked it near a hotel, where he was forced to shift the vehicle.

Then the driver again parked the bus at another hotel, where he again met the same fate. He chose to park the bus near an apartment where he managed to convince the watchman. The cleaner kept some wooden piece under the rear wheel to make sure the vehicle doesn't move. However the owner of the apartment after noticing the vehicle, asked the driver to move from the premises. As a result, the driver got into the bus, but before he could start the vehicle, without noticing it, the cleaner removed the supporting wood from the back tyre which led the bus to roll down.

"We have checked the bus and the brakes were working. As the vehicle rolled down, the driver panicked and was unable to start the engine and apply brakes. Worst part is that he even failed to apply hand brakes, which was also in good condition", said Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP-Traffic) K Prabhakar.

The traffic police officials collected the CCTV footage from nearby which showed that few pedestrians who were crossing the road near the junction, had a lucky escape by jumping to other side of the road. “The bus literally rolled down like a bullet. As per the preliminary investigation, the case seems to be the negligence of driver and cleaner. However we will ascertain the facts after we interrogate the driver", said Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) K Mahendra Patrudu.
