Guntur: YSRCP president and Leader of Opposition Y S Jaganmohan Reddy launched a two-day Rythu Deeksha at Nallapadu Road in Guntur city on Monday mounting pressure on the TD government to solve the problems faced by the farmers in the state.

Addressing the gathering at the Rythu Deeksha, Jagan criticised the Naidu government for sharp fall in chilli prices, which have fallen from Rs 12,000 per quintal last year to Rs 4,000 per quintal this year.

Similarly, turmeric which was sold at Rs 6,500 per quintal last season is selling less than Rs 5,000 per quintal this year, he said, demanding that the government purchase chillis through Markfed at Rs 8,000 per quintal.

Jagan said after the government announced Rs1,500 per quintal compensation to chilli and turmeric farmers, the prices have fallen drastically causing heavy losses to the farmers. He reminded that Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu assured that he would set up price stabilization fund with Rs 5,000 core to extend helping hand to the farmers at the time of elections and added that after coming to power, he had forgotten his election promise.

The YSRCP leader said that when the TDP was in the Opposition, Naidu had promised to implement the Swaminathan Commission recommendations and after coming to power, the TD government had done nothing to implement the Swaminathan Commission recommendations.

He criticised the government on the input subsidy, stating that it did not take any steps to release the same to the farmers. He said cotton scam took place in Guntur district during the TD regime.

He said the Central government has increased MSP for cotton by Rs 160 per quintal during the last three years in the TDP rule. The Central government hiked MSP for paddy by Rs 50 per quintal only, but the CM did not write any letter to the Centre.

He said the cost of cultivation is going up year after year, but the MSP is not hiked and, as a result this, the farmers are incurring heavy losses. He said due to the crop loan waiver scheme of the government, the farmers are not getting crop loans from the banks. He said the farmers who cannot bear the losses in agriculture are committing suicides.

Jagan said that Naidu after coming to power has forgotten his election promises and cheating the farmers. He said he had taken up the Rythu Deeksha to highlight the problems of the farmers.

MP Vijaya Sai Reddy, MLC Ummareddy Venkateswarulu, MLAs, Pennelli Rama Krishna Reddy, Gopireddy Srinivasa Reddy, Kona Raghupathi, SK Mustafa, Alla Rama Krishna Reddy, YSRCP official spokesman Ambati Rambabu, YSRCP district president Marri Rajasekhar, Guntur city president Lella Appi Reddy were among those participated.
