As many students are not opting for driving licence, the RTA will organise special awareness camps this summer, said deputy commissioner of transport S Venkateswarara Rao. He further stated that there is only 10 per cent growth in issuance of licence though the number of vehicles are increasing every year.

The department is providing almost 400 driving slots per day for the convenience of new applicants, but on an average only 150 slots are being filled.The DTC told this correspondent on Tuesday that few students are going for driving classes. They are appearing for test with inadequate learning and failing at the test.Rao said he will conduct a special drive for the students exclusively for issuing driving licence and also organise awareness camps on the road safety this summer vacation.
With inadequate staff, the department has conducted camps for Naval Officers’ Wives Association and other segmented public and also in professional colleges in the city. Regarding fitness and road worthiness of educational institutions vehicles, the deputy commissioner said the vehicle fitness certificate is valid up to mid May every year and will be renewed in the same month at Gambiram.
According to last year records in Visakhapatnam, Anakapalli and Gajuwaka RTA offices, a total 1,536 vehicles were issued valid fitness certificates, 126 vehicles were rejected and only one vehicle was seized. He also said every rejected vehicle will be given one month grace period to rectify their technical problems as per government guidelines to get fitness certificate.
