Guntur: YSRCP president and Leader of Opposition in the State Assembly Y S Jaganmohan Reddy on Tuesday said that after Chandrababu Naidu became Chief Minister, cultivating area is going down in the state, due to lack of supporting price for crops. Jagan concluded his two-day Rythu Deeksha which was undertaken here to mount pressure on the state government to solve farmers’ problems. A local farmer offered lemon juice to him to end his Deeksha.

- While crops were cultivated in 43 lakh hectares in 2014-15, it dropped to 37 lakh hectares in 2016-17

Speaking on this occasion, he said that before the TDP came to power in the state, the farmers had cultivated crops in 43 lakh hectares. The YSRCP leader further said that during the 2014-2015, various banks have targeted to sanction crop loans worth Rs 56,000 crore and the banks have sanctioned Rs 39,000 crore. During last year, various banks in the state have targeted to sanction crop loans worth Rs 83,000 crore, but they have sanctioned loans only up to Rs 39,000 crore.
He said the farmers had to repay loans to banks to the tune of Rs 87,612 crore before the crop loan waiver scheme was implemented. He said after implementation of the crop loan waiver scheme, banks have imposed interest burden of Rs 48,000 crore on the farmers.
He said that during the last three years, state faced severe drought conditions and added that agriculture workers were migrating to Bengaluru and Maharashtra for livelihood. He flayed the state government for its failure to provide remunerative price to farmers for 15 crops including paddy, turmeric, red gram, onion, tomato and chillies.
They were not able to even get back their investment, he added. He said Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu assured that he would set up price stabilisation fund to the tune of Rs 5,000 crore, but he failed to keep his promise.Jagan alleged that the government is escalating the cost of the irrigation projects to benefit the contractors. He said the price escalation imposed additional burden on the state exchequer.
