Vijayawada: Gannavaram Airport, which was accorded international airport status would get new permanent terminal at a cost of Rs 560 crore.

A temporary terminal was built at a cost of Rs 130 crore and it would not be sufficient to meet the ever increasing traffic. Keeping in view the future requirements, Central government will construct a new permanent terminal.

This was disclosed by Vijayawada MP Kesineni Srinivas (Nani), who along with Machilipatnam MP Konakalla Narayana Rao, Gannavaram MLA Vallabhaneni Vamsi Mohan visited the airport on Thursday and took part in celebrations along with staff and local villagers.

It may be mentioned here that Krishna district MPs Kesineni Nani and Konakalla Narayana Rao made many representations and tried for upgradation of the airport.

Addressing the media contingent at the airport, Kesineni Nani said that Gannavaram Airport achieved international status in a short span of three years.

He said that the Union government decided to construct new terminal with an estimated outlay of Rs 560 crore and expand the runway from 3,400 metres to 4,400 meters to meet the needs of the flights and passengers.

Machilipatnam MP Konakalla Narayana Rao said Union minister for civil aviation Ashok Gajapati Raju and Union urban development minister M Venkaiah Naidu made tireless efforts to accord international status to the airport. He felt that bifurcation of the state led to development of Gannavaram Airport.

The MPs thanked the Prime Minister Narendra Modi for according international status to the airport. Airport director Madhusudana Rao and officials also took part in the celebrations.
