Visakhapatnam: In a bid to prevent ever increasing road accidents, the RTA officials launched a special drive in the city and suburbs and issued stern warning to the motorists who drive around without a valid driving licence. The officials instead of collecting fine from the offenders, have decided not to penalise the motorists, who caught without driving licence, but want to produce them before court for prosecution to send them to jail for a couple of days.

Heading the team, Deputy Commissioner of Road Transport Authority S Venkateswara Rao said mere counselling and imposing a fine was not deterring the motorists to abide by the law.“We have launched a special drive in the city and surroundings to identify the people driving without licence. We will produce them before the court of law and send them to jail. Perhaps undergoing prison term would make them what is the law about,’’ the deputy commissioner said.

He said the offenders will be booked under Sections 180 (allowing unauthorised persons to drive vehicles) and 181 (driving without a licence) of the Motor Vehicle (MV) Act. The offenders will be liable for a fine as well as have to undergo imprisonment for some days. A senior police officer in the traffic wing said going by the records, there are more vehicles than driving licence holders in the city and at least 300 to 500 people, including women, are getting caught every month driving without licence.

People take it lighter for not having licence and often presume mere payment of fine will make them getting away from harsher punishment, the officer said. The city and suburbs have 12 lakh vehicles and 6.2 lakh men possess driving licence. Only 37,000 women have licene. Last year, over 12,000 motorists were booked for driving without licence.
