Visakhapatnam: Passengers travelling on an APSRTC bus from Visakhapatnam to Kakinada on Saturday were shocked to find the driver constantly talking to passengers while driving the bus.In fact, he was answering the calls from passengers seeking reservations on the instructions of the APSRTC management.
Well-known political leaders, who unsuccessfully contested the recent MLC elections and convener of North Andhra Development Forum A Aja Sharma, in a letter to the managing director of APSRTC, copies of which released to the media, said as a bonafide passenger he was shocked to find the driver talking over mobile phone starting from the RTC Complex till the bus reached Steel Plant area.
He said as per rules of APSRTC and Motor Vehicle Act, 1988, driver should not use mobile while driving and it is an offence attracting even suspension or cancellation of driving licence. But, strangely the management itself gave the mobile number of the driver to all passengers who have made online reservation through SMSes, so that they can be in touch with him.
Sharma said he failed to understand how an organisation like APSRTC had made its drivers to violate its own rules. This coupled with the issue of tickets by driver himself while driving will surely make the driver to lose his concentration on driving. If any untoward incident happens, responsibility would lay with the corporation and not with the driver. It is most irresponsible and illegal act of the corporation, he added.
